About the Indigenous artist

Vee Thornbury
I was born in Parkes in 1941.
I am the great granddaughter of Sarah Laws.
My father, John Wakefield was a Wiradjuri man from Dubbo NSW.
I started painting at the age of 53, studying at
TAFE in Dubbo and learning a variety of techniques;
Painting using a variety of paints, Pastal Art, Pottery,
Lino cutting and printing.
Perfecting these techniques I was able to share
my knowledge using art and stories about my
own personal experiences.
In turn I've been able to teach others,
passing on what I have learned from my
teachers and showing young people how to
express themselves using a canvas.
I have had an extraordinary journey as a wife,
mother, grandmother and an Aboriginal artist.
